Show #484 – December 28, 2019

Guest: Neal Rogers

This week, Cycling Tips.com’s editor-at-large Neal Rogers joins me to talk about the pros year in review, what we might expect in 2020, and tells us about his head-to-head ride with ex-pro Jonathan Vaughters in the Battle of he Mamils – or, as Neal likes to say, “the has been versus the never was.”

Neal has been working in cycling journalism for the past twenty years and has a pretty solid grasp on the sport as well as some interesting thoughts about the future.

I caught up with him just before the Christmas holiday.

You can also follow Neal on Twitter @nealrogers.

Show #440 – February 16, 2019

Guests: Kevin Mills; Bill Elliston

This week, Kevin Mills, Senior VP for Policy at Rails to Trails introduces us to the Great American Bike Trail – a cross country, 12-state alternative to riding on the road. With 12 states already identified and thousands of miles already in place, Kevin fills us in on what the next steps are in completing this long-held vision of the Rails to Trails organization.

Then, it’s a great conversation with Bill Elliston,  pro racer, coach, race announcer, and probably one of the most mellow and well rounded “lifers” in our sport of cycling.

Highlighted in an interview by Peter Flax back in 2017, Bill Elliston’s history and career come to life in our conversation – from his early beginnings to his work with the athletes coaches today, Bill has a great perspective on cycling.

Show #378 – December 9, 2017

Guests: Shane Stokes; Dennis Markatos-Soriano; Courtney Laggner

My first guest, Shane Stokes, is the news editor for cyclingtips.com. He’s in Girona, Spain hanging out with about 100 pros who are training and getting ready for the 2018 race season.

Recently, Shane published, “Human rights groups and others call on Giro d’Italia to abandon Israel start“, an article about the Giro d’Italia and the unprecedented move to take the first 3 stages off the Continent and begin in Israel. As one might expect in this time of international turmoil, the move is controversial.

Shane and I discuss the reasons behind the move, who might be protesting and why, and what the riders are saying – if anything.

Then, I catch up with executive director of the East Coast Greenway, Dennis Markatos-Soriano. When we last spoke with Niles Barnes, who is the director of Greenway programs, the 3,000 mile River Relay was just about to get underway. This week, Dennis and I talk about the results of the relay – how many events were held, how many people participated, and how important the Greenway is to the economies of those communities through which it passes.

Finally, we offer up the last of our tangible gift ideas for 2017 when we visit the family owned and run Darn Tough Sock Mill in Vermont. Marketing manager Courtney Laggner “walks” us through the decades old company, explaining why the Darn Tough brand has been able to garner such loyal customers.

She introduces us to the new BA (Bad Ass) Barney and BA (Bad Ass) Betty socks – for all you winter cycling fans and tells us about how to become a “sock tester”.

Kick it back folks! Enjoy!

Show #339 – March 18, 2017

Guests: Christine Culver, DeVon Griffin, Tim Thompson, Paolo Casalis

This week’s show offers up a wide variety of topics from the bicycle world.

My first guest, Christine Culver, is the former president now board member of the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition. Christine and I talk about everything from her custom jewelry and stable of classic bicycles to her thoughts on advocacy and the state of cycling in the Sonoma County area.

Then, my first guest newscaster, DeVon Griffin, and I have a brief chat about Team Sky and the interview that Cyclingtips’ Shane Stokes did with Paul Kimmage. Is Team Sky going down that “U.S. Postal” road and what WAS in that mysterious package that was delivered to the team?

I talk with retired police officer Tim Thompson whose experience with OsteoStrong helped him to go from virtual immobility to being able to walk 15 miles without pain. Now, Tim manages the Willougby Hills, Ohio office of OsteoStrong and tells us what the process is and how it helps with strength, flexibility, and balance.

Finally, it’s off to Turn, Italy to chat with Paolo Casalis about the new film “48 Hairpin Turns at Night“, just released last week. The documentary is aboutBI and his quest to ride down the Stelvio at night – without brakes or handlebars. And, Giuliano is 77 years old.

So… big show – great guests! Let’s go!
