This week it’s FOUR conversations.

We begin on a somber note as we remember the Aexon Hagens Berman press officer, Sean Weide, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 49 at his home in Omaha, Nebraska this week.

Sean was only 49 and one of those 24/7 people who worked behind the scenes as the conduit between the riders and their teams and the press.

Caley wrote a great tribute to him on the VeloNews.com site this week; and, the stories about Sean keep rolling in.

Then, we head over to France where Peter Cossins, who lives within a few miles of the 2017 Stage 13 TdF event will be ridden this year, has written a new book titled “The First Tour de France. In 1903 , 60 riders lined up to race 19 stages in what has become the most famous cycling event in the world. The book is a treasure trove of historical information.

Then, it’s off to the Big Apple to chat with event director for BikeNY, Jena McLaughlina bout the “Discover the Hudson Valley” ride coming up June 25th.

Finally, Hans Rey joins me to talk about his Tutti Fruitti course in Livigno, Italy and invites us to come along and ride with him this summer!

Many, many thanks to Sean Weide for his assistance in lining up our guests this week.

We begin with Olympian and Tour de France pro rider Brent Bookwalter. A bit jet-lagged from his trip back from Rio, Brent nonetheless offers us a great glimpse into this year’s Olympic races as the only American to ride both the road race and the time trial.

He got to see Rio from a unique perspective and tells us about his experiences.

Brent is also deeply involved with the Association of National Professional Road Cyclists here in the U.S working tirelessly for the rights of cyclists including salaries, benefits, and retirement.

And, to “give it back” there’s Brent’s “Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo” in Otober. It’s a fun event for the end-of-season that invites everyone to ride!

After a break and news, we head on out to Colorado to speak with Greg Daniel, the youngest U.S. Pro Road Champion EVER!

Greg has been racing since he was 13 and his experience, even at such a young age, have shaped him into a seasoned pro. After his Championship ride, which has a story all its own, he was signed to the Trek-Segafredo team for the next two seasons.

His goal? Why, the Tour de France, of course!

You know that feeling when the temperature is just right, and there’s enough of a breeze to cool you down, but not enough to impede forward progress, and your bike is shifting and riding with the silent precision of a Swiss watch, and your legs feel like they could turn the cranks at this rate indefinitely? Yeah, me too. Rarely. But just often enough to lure me out in case today is that day.

And now on to this week’s show:

If you’ve ever wondered why your buddy climbs so much faster than you, or can out sprint you, even though you train just as hard (or harder) David Epstein has your answer. It turns out that almost all athletic achievement is, to some extent, genetically predisposed. The way our bodies respond to training, food and drugs varies according to our DNA. Epstein’s new book, The Sports Gene is loaded with information about how our potential for different sports is determined, and how it’s realized.

Our second guest this week is not a competitive cyclist, but he handily walks away with the prize for most interesting and creative use of his time. Rob Greenfield has traveled far and wide on a shoestring (or less!). His latest adventure involved a 4700-mile ride across the U.S. on a bamboo bike while living off the grid. Rob’s tiny carbon footprint makes mine look like a Sasquatch by comparison.

Finally, the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah is happening now, and Diane caught up with Sean Weide, the press liaison for Team BMC, which is racing the ToU. Diane and Sean talk about racing in the U.S., drug-testing, and the consistent success that BMC’s riders have been having this year.
