July 9, 2020 – Special Edition

Guest: Rachael Maney From Bike Law

For as long as I can remember, the bicycle industry has been on a “mission” to get more women on bikes – whether that means recreationally, for transportation, for leisure riding, or for elite competition.

The truth is, that there are already millions of women on bicycles – both worldwide and right here in the U.S. And yet, we seem invisible.

At this moment in time, a time where nothing seems to fit – where there are so few things we feel we can depend upon and trust anymore – there is the simple and well known fact that bicycles and women go together – perfectly.

To illustrate this more fully, my friend, colleague, and an elite bicycle rider herself, Rachael Maney, and I offer up this conversation.

It was recorded July 3rd.

We welcome feedback and comments.

  1. Great Points Nationally and Internationally! There are lots of women bike commuters in Colorado and more specifically in Denver. Denver is fortunate to have women in critical roles in the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.

  2. It’s interesting to see women talking about working together then creating an entirely new “women’s cycling day” when Cyclo femme has been doing a women’s cycling day for years, now (in May.) Would be great if women would work with existing events to boost each other up. Glad to hear the October day is at least being moved to May for 2021 because of the pandemic.

    1. Hi Mary,

I reported on Cyclo Femme for a long time with Sarai Snyder. I haven’t heard anything about it for quite a while and I will absolutely pass on the information to Rachael at Bike Law. Thank you for your comments.

      1. Thanks! Yeah, Sarai has been doing that for 10 years, so I just hate seeing people reinvent it instead of build on each other and create together.

        1. Mary, I would dislike that, too! But I am not sure that “reinvent” is the right choice of words as our belief (and I speak only for myself and Bike Law, and not for Heather and Lauren), is that the more awareness and attention to such important issues, the better. In fact, we feel there is a pie big enough to share. If you would like to pass on any information about Cycle Femme I would love to look at it and support our dynamic she-cycling community!
