Today’s show features our friend and most excellent chef Biju Thomas. Recently featured in Nation’s Restaurant News because Indian Food is going to be a top trend in 2017, I caught up with Biju on the road between Little Curry Shop I and Little Curry Shop II.

We get to learn about what makes Indian Food so yummy, hear a really cool idea for a winter gathering, and find out that cookies are just as good as any energy bar on the market!!! HA!

So, now that we’re full of good food and have added a few (ahem) calories; it’s time to think about taking them back off and getting back ON the training wagon.

Show #292 – April 2, 2016

Sorry this is late everyone!  I was on vacation in Ridgeland, Mississippi for the OBO Tandem Rally.  A really well put-together event, 41 teams began the day on Saturday.  This was my first “extended” ride since my stem cell therapy last July, so I was delighted to have finished the 41 mile route.

Rode another 24 on Sunday and then left Mississippi headed for New Orleans.  We stayed at the Fleur de Lis Mansion in the Garden District and walked EVERYWHERE.  We did not move the car or take any other form of transportation until we left on Wednesday.  New Orleans is without a doubt one of the most interesting places I’ve ever visited.  The culture(s), food, architecture, and rich history were a bit overwhelming and difficult to digest in just a few days.

And, wait for it, as long as we’re talking food AND digestion… my show for April 2nd starts out with our favorite cycling chef, Biju Thomas.  His Feed Zone Cookbook series have been wildly popular – as is his Little Curry Shop in Denver, Colorado.

The new book in the series, The Feed Zone Table is not just a book of recipes however – rather, it is a short treatise written by both Biju and his partner at Skratch Labs, Dr. Allen Lim, about the effects food, companionship, friendship, and culture have on pro athletes as they struggle with what is mostly a solitary life.

The hardbound book is beautifully written and illustrated with some great candid shots of many riders you might know as you page through the concepts and recipes.

After a short break and some news, I head to South Carolina to welcome back Velo News journalist Dan Wuori.  Dan and I discuss the loss of two pro cyclists in the peloton in late March as well as how incidents between cyclists and the motorbikes that seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time might be better regulated in the upcoming race season and beyond.  We also talk about the Spring Classics, who is looking good for the Tour, and more.

Guests: Chef Biju talks leftovers and Little Curry Shop; Inga Thompson, new inducted Bicycle Hall of Famer

On our post-Thanksgiving show, we’re offering up some leftovers! No – not an old show; REAL left overs!!

And the perfect person to give original ideas for leftovers is Chef Biju Thomas. Chef Biju, co-author of the Feedzone Cookbooks, talks burritos, chilis, and more. He will also tell us a bit about his new book (won’t be out until Fall, 2015) as well as his background and how that has evolved into his new restaurant, Little Curry Shop that will open in Denver next week.

We’ll have news – most of it GOOD; and, then we will have the first half of a great conversation I had with newly inducted Bicycle Hall of Famer, Inga Thompson. Along with three other cycling luminaries, Inga was awarded her place in bicycling history at a ceremony earlier this month.

Inga, who is an outspoken advocate for cleaning up the sport of cycling (her interview in Velo News in June, 2014 is worth the read)

As always, Inga is fun, informative, and thought provoking and because our discussion was so interesting, I just couldn’t bear to cut it off.  So, we’ll have the second half of our conversation next week.

Here in the northern hemisphere, we’re celebrating Summer Solstice (and the perfect Solstice activity would be a bike ride, hint, hint). The astronomical celebration continues tomorrow (Sunday, June 23rd) when we’ll have a perigee full moon, when the moon is at its closest to Earth for the entire year. Another great excuse for a night ride (or at least to go outside and stare at the sky for a while)!

Meanwhile, in the subterranean studios of WJCU, Diane has cooked up an episode of The Outspoken Cyclist as big as the sky. First up is engineer and prolific cycling author Rob Van der Plas. Van der Plas has written a small library of cycling-related books, and his latest is an epic collection entitled The Bicycle Illustrations of Daniel Rebour. In an age where everyone and everything is photographed and shared instantly via social media, Van der Plas’ book is 288 pages of pure technical, black-and-white, line-drawing happiness. You need a copy for every bathroom in your home (plus one for the coffee table)!

After the news and a break, Diane welcomes back chef Biju Thomas, whose new book (co-written with Allen Lim, PhD) is Feed Zone Portables: A Cookbook of On-the-Go Food for Athletes. Thomas and Lim build on the premise of their first book, namely that athletes should eat real food during exercise, with simple, tasty recipes that are both wholesome and mobile. For those of us not lucky enough to have Skratch Labs follow us around and cook for us on the pro tour, this book is the next best thing.

Well, here we are in the middle of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and one of the many things Diane and I are thankful for is the opportunity to invade your ears each week and bring you our take on what’s happening in cycling. And naturally, we’re also thankful that you tune in or download each week. Without you, we’d just be two cyclists sitting in a small, dark room taking to ourselves.

So Diane and Brian up and run off to the Adironacks this week, but before she skipped town, Diane put together a show we think you’ll be thankful for.

First up is Chef Biju Thomas, who has combined his passion for bike racing with his passion and skill at cooking. Chef Biju has teamed up with Dr. Allen Lim on The Feed Zone Cookbook: Fast and Flavorful Food for Athletes. The book focuses on making tasty, healthful food that can sustain a competitive athlete, and yet require a minimum of ingredients and preparation.

After a short break, Maynard Hershon is back with an original story that’s just right for the holiday season, entitled “Nice Wheels”. Always nice to hear from Maynard, and we promise to badger him to return to TOC periodically.

We close out this Thanksgiving weekend show with an encore of an interview Diane conducted almost exactly a year ago at the now-closed Joseph Beth Booksellers in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Author David V. Herlihy was in town to promote his book The Lost Cyclist.
