Show #187 – March 22, 2014

Guests: Jeff Koenig, Big Poppi Bicycles; Jody Dzuranin, Consider Biking; Jacob VanSickle, Bike Cleveland

Three different guests, and three different perspectives on the recently completed National Bike Summit in Washington, DC.

First up is Jeff Koenig, co-owner of Big Poppi Bikes, in Manhattan, Kansas, to talk about the role your local bike dealer plays (and doesn’t play) in bicycle advocacy. Jeff not only attended the summit, but gave a presentation as well.

Our downstate friend, Jody Dzuranin of Consider Biking in Columbus, Ohio, joins us to give her perspective on the summit, including a warm reception from the Republican senator from Ohio, Rob Portman. Advocacy can be a tough gig in a sprawling state capitol, but the Consider Biking crew has made great strides in their young existence, including the 2nd Annual Ohio Women’s Bicycling Summit, coming up on May 3rd.

Lastly, but closest to home, we check in with Jacob Van Sickle of Bike Cleveland, who has also been busy pushing for bicycling accommodations in a city that is not exactly flush with cash for discretionary projects. And yet, great things are slowly happening for cyclists in our fair city and the surrounding region.

Show #135 – March 23, 2013

GUESTS: JODY DZURANIN, JEANNIE MARTIN, ANGIE SCHMITT

It’s the invasion of the bike-savvy women on this week’s Outspoken Cyclist. Not to worry, the guys can listen (and learn a lot) as well.

A couple of weeks ago, Jody Dzuranin and Jeannie Martin of the Columbus advocacy organization Consider Biking were part of the Ohio delegation to the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC. The report this year is quite optimistic, with one of the main themes being “we’ve earned our seat at the table; it’s time to sit down and get to work.” Listen as Jody and Jeannie give their impressions of the Summit.

A couple hundred miles closer to home, Diane connects with Angie Schmitt of Streetsblog and RustWire. Angie is based on the near west side of Cleveland and writes about biking and walking issues, with a focus on the industrial Midwest. She and Diane talk about some of her recent articles that explore interesting angles on how motorist privilege impacts cyclists and pedestrians.

Show #67 – December 3, 2011

Guests: Jody Dzuranin, Consider Biking; Thomas Prehn, Cateye America

The calendar says December, but the weather still says October. No complaints here, and if the “weather suits your clothes” as the song says, keep riding outdoors. The three month indoor ride to nowhere will start soon enough.

The first stop on tonight’s tour takes us south to the capitol of our fair state, Columbus, Ohio, and a conversation with Jody Dzuranin, Operations Manager for Consider Biking. Consider Biking serves ‘people who pedal’ in the Columbus and surrounding area of Ohio. Jody will bring us up to date on their Open Streets initiative, and progress on the Ohio-to-Erie Trail, among other exciting opportunities for cyclists.

Regardless of how warm (or cold) it is, daylight is at a premium this time of year. Our second guest can help with that if you want or need to ride at night safely and legally. We’re joined by Thomas Prehn, President of Cateye America. Thomas has news about some very cool lights, including USB-rechargeable models inexpensive enough to fit in your Christmas stocking (hint, hint).
