Two guests this week!

My first guest is one of the most knowledgeable and forward thinking people I know. Dr. Gabe Mirkin, who at 81 remembers more than most of us will ever know, discusses diet (and dieting), metabolism, fads, and what we need to do to maintain our health long into our 80’s, 90’s, and beyond.  (If you don’t subscribe to his weekly eZine… maybe you should!)

After the break, I talk with one of if not the most renowned historian in the field of bicycles. David Herlihy, who has been on the show several other times, is always full of facts, anecdotes, and historical stories no one else seems to be able to uncover.

His 2006 book, Bicycle: The History was named the #1 book on bicycles by Outside Magazine; and, The Lost Cyclist, which we explored on the show back in 2010 uncovered an old cold case with the probable conclusion of that happened to Frank Lenz.

Now, David’s new article in the June issue of Adventure Cyclist Magazine, “Eastman & Overman” details the relationship of George Eastman (think Kodak!) and Albert Overman (who?). The story is rich in history and gives us a glimpse into the world of cycling from a perspective heretofore untold.

Guests: Bob Roll aka “Bobke”; author and historian David Herlihy

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better – it gets better!

The weather is fabulous, the riding season is in full swing, the Giro d’Italia and Amgen Tour of California are happening, and I have the honor of two more great guests this week.

First up is Bobke – Mr Bob Roll himself. When I talked with Phil Liggett a couple of weeks ago, I told him I wanted to speak with Bob and the stars aligned so that it became possible. Taking a short break from his busy speaking and commentating schedule, Bob was at home in Colorado this week and we sat down (well, in our separate locations!) and had a chat about the Paris-Roubaix, Bob’s racing days, the book he authored that is commanding almost $100 a copy these days, why he finds cycling such a fascinating sport, and even a few off-cycling topics.

Then, I head on east to Boston to welcome David Herlihy back to the show. When his book, The Lost Cyclist, was published a few years ago, I sat down with David right here in Cleveland where he was giving a talk and signing books at a local book store. Now, more has come to light about Franz Lenz, that “lost cyclist”, as well as another oddly similar story about the two cyclists who preceded Lenz in his bid to bicycle around the world. It all comes together in “Round Trip“, an exhibit of 43 almost lost photographs that will open in Houston, Texas on the 14th.

Well, here we are in the middle of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and one of the many things Diane and I are thankful for is the opportunity to invade your ears each week and bring you our take on what’s happening in cycling. And naturally, we’re also thankful that you tune in or download each week. Without you, we’d just be two cyclists sitting in a small, dark room taking to ourselves.

So Diane and Brian up and run off to the Adironacks this week, but before she skipped town, Diane put together a show we think you’ll be thankful for.

First up is Chef Biju Thomas, who has combined his passion for bike racing with his passion and skill at cooking. Chef Biju has teamed up with Dr. Allen Lim on The Feed Zone Cookbook: Fast and Flavorful Food for Athletes. The book focuses on making tasty, healthful food that can sustain a competitive athlete, and yet require a minimum of ingredients and preparation.

After a short break, Maynard Hershon is back with an original story that’s just right for the holiday season, entitled “Nice Wheels”. Always nice to hear from Maynard, and we promise to badger him to return to TOC periodically.

We close out this Thanksgiving weekend show with an encore of an interview Diane conducted almost exactly a year ago at the now-closed Joseph Beth Booksellers in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Author David V. Herlihy was in town to promote his book The Lost Cyclist.
