Show #291 – March 26, 2016

Guests: Custom bike builder Mike DeSalvo; Urban planner, writer, and author Emilie Bahr

My guests this week are custom bike builder Mike DeSalvo of DeSalvo Cycles in Ashland, Oregon and Emilie Bahr, whose new book Urban Revolutions: A Woman’s Guide to Two-Wheeled Transportation, is full of advice, information, and inspiration for someone who is thinking about getting on a bike – for whatever reasons she might have!

Mike offers the full range of bicycles from single speed to full blown racing machine and gives us some insight into how the custom builder can have one-up on the big manufacturers in covering trends and seeing a market for a specific kind of machine.

He also likes pizza, doesn’t have a shop dog, and does love snow boarding!

Emilie, who lives and work in New Orleans, is about to go on maternity leave with her first baby and offers some very interesting insights into urban transportation and how things have both changed and stayed the same in New Orleans.

Show #290 – March 19, 2016

Guests: Race director Martin Ernest Bruhn; Ride director Rodney McConnell

But, it’s also the harbinger of Spring and THAT makes me very happy.

Tonight, we are going to talk with two event directors about two very different events – and, we are doing that now because you need to plan for them in advance.

First up is one of the most enthusiastic, passionate, and well-versed-in-the-competitive-event-world race directors with whom I’ve ever had a conversation. Martin Bruhn is the force behind the Woodstock Women’s Cycling Grand Prix (WWCGP) in iconic and lovely Woodstock, NY. Racing through the magnificent Catskill Mountains, this WOMEN’S ONLY event takes place Saturday, May 7th.

Here is what Martin has to say about the mission of this event: to highlight the need for equal sportsmanship and attention for female bicycle racers in the male dominated sport of competitive cycling. That pretty much says it all, except Martin has some very poignant and interesting things to say about women’s racing from a perspective I haven’t really heard in the past.

After our break and some news, we head on our to Missouri for a chat with Rodney McConnell, ride director for a 4-state, week-long event that covers Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Ride the Fault Line does just that – it travels along the New Madrid earthquake fault line – though Rodney assured me there has been no seismic activity in a very, very long time.

So, come on along and listen to… Martin Bruhn as we learn about the WWCGP!

Show #289 – March 12, 2016

Back from the North American Handmade Show and bringing you another great frame builder’s story.

Greg White has been a chef, a Hollywood cinematographer, a pro cyclist, and now is the force behind Magic Cycle Werks in Bend, Oregon.  Greg and I talk about his background, his education, and especially his thoughts about bikes.

Greg debuted a special frame he built for Team Sky’s Ian Boswell at the show and we learn the interesting and serendipitous story behind it.

After a break and some news, I head over to Ridgeland, Mississippi to speak with his Honor the Mayor!  Gene McGee and I will meet face-to-face at the OBO Tandem Rally in Ridgeland and I wanted to get the skinny of the city, the riding, and the food!

So, buckle up.  It’s The Outspoken Cyclist!

Guests: U-Bikes Doug Emerson; Professional Bike Fitter Happy Freedman

I’m off to the 2016 North American Handmade Show this weekend; but, not before Tim and I produced a great show for you this week.

First up is bike owner extraordinaire Doug Emerson from University Bikes in Boulder, Colorado. He knew bicycles were his destiny from the time he was in high school and he’s never looked back since then.

His philosophy about his store, those who work with him, and those he serves is an example to us all!

Oh, and did I tell you that he realized a 30+ year dream of building a velodrome in his area? Yes, he did!

After a break and the news, we take off for the east coast to speak with Happy Freedman. Happy started out in bicycle retail and started bike fitting way back when. Today, he works at the Hospital for Special Surgery where his skills and knowledge are coupled with the expertise of great specialists in many fields as well as cutting edge technology and equipment to offer a wide range of solutions for many cycling problems.

Happy with explain his work and give us some basic tips onnot only why you might not be comfortable on your bike but also what to do about it.

Show #286 – February 20, 2016

Guests: USA Cycling’s Derek Bouchard-Hall; The Boston Bike Party

When USA Cycling went looking for a new CEO, they recruited a powerhouse in the form of Derek Bouchard-Hall.

Derek is a former pro cyclist, has degrees from Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford. He’s worked for Wiggle UK, the world’s largest on line cycling retailer, and brings a fresh perspective to what USA Cycling needs as the sport tries to regain some esteem, credibility, and balance.

My lengthy interview with Derek covers a wide range of topics and makes for a fascinating conversation.

We then lighten it up with two young and enthusiastic cyclists from the Boston Bike Party.

Every month, a group of riders invites the community to come and ride – in costume, with music, and ending up with food and drink. Greg and Aleta tell us all about it in the second half of the show.

So – sit back and enjoy my conversation with USA Cycling’s CEO Derek Bouchard-Hall.

Show #285 – February 13, 2016

Guests: Connie Carpenter-Phinney, Don Walker

I love my work!

Connie Carpenter-Phinney has been a champion since she was 14, and today as the wife of Davis Phinney, the mother of BMC’s Taylor Phinney, and the mother of a world class Nordic skiing daughter, she relishes the quirky, fun, and fascinating lifestyle that they have developed over the past decades.

Connie and I talk about a variety of topics including Parkinson’s disease (Davis was diagnosed at the young age of 40) and the Sufferlandria competition that is raising money for the Davis Phinney Foundation.

We get in to a bit of women’s racing history and speculation about how and why it has changed – especially n light of today’s great competitors.

And, of course we discuss Taylor’s bid for gold at the 2016 Olympics.

After a short break to punch up Radiothon, we head on in to some news and then down to Kentucky to talk with “The Don” – Don Walker.

NAHBS 2016 is around the corner and it’s always fun to find out what’s coming up for the artisan show that is now in its 12th year!

SO – back to Radiothon for just a moment… the window of opportunity to pledge your support of our show and all the great programming at WJCU (which streams some of the best college radio anywhere) will close on Tuesday, February 17th at 5pm. PLEASE pledge your support!

Show #284 – February 6, 2016

Guests: VeloVoices; Carlos Perea; Matt McNees

It’s Radiothon week! Won’t you consider making a pledge to help support The Outspoken Cyclist AND WCJU? We ask only once a year and the money is used strictly for the radio station – everything from new equipment to upkeep and programming. It’s the only time we EVER ask for your help and we hope that it is worth your time and a few bucks to help us keep great college station programming on the air.

That said, we have another hour of interesting, fun, and thought-provoking cycling topics this week.

First up we welcome the “voices” behind VeloVoices.com. The wildly popular fan-based site provides up-to-the-minute information through social media, their web site, and twice-monthly podcasts on pro cycling. From coverage of the Tour down Under to the Tour de France, VeloVoices looks at cycling from your perspective. Kathy Hall AKA KittyFondue and Chris Carlson AKA Kiss_my_Panache, the voice of the podcasts, talk with me this evening to tell us more.

Then, we talk with Carlos Perea. From a hand-me-down bike as a kid, Carlos has come full circle to giving back to cycling in conjunction with his company, Yahoo – sending $55,000 in grant money to World Bicycle Relief in 2015 to help with their African Buffalo Bike program. His story is inspiring and heartfelt.

After a break, we head for North Carolina where we talk with professor Matt McNees about his new book, Sport Philosophy Now: The Culture of Sports After The Lance Armstrong Scandal.

Matt’s interest in how sport is perceived in the U.S. and why we have such a reverence for coaches, pro athletes, and the teams that we come to support began at an early age and culminates in the questions he asks and tries to answer in this new study.

Chapters such as: Childhood in Sport, Is Sport Fiction More Real than Sport Fact, and Did Anyone Win” will make you think deeply about whether we are going down the right road as a new era is ushered in with the appointment of Derek Bouchard-Hall at the head of USA Cycling.

So, remember to whip put that wallet, log on to www.wjcu.org, and pledge your support as you listen to your favorite cycling show!

The conversation is lively, fun, and truly fascinating.

** Note: There are not many articles or much history about Hugh on line.

After a break and our weekly news round-up, we talk with a 4-time Kickstarter winner Brian Davis. He finds his inspiration from the things that annoy him while riding his bike and, from his first project, The FixItStiks to his latest product The Weatherneck, Brian understands what makes a great product AND a successful crowd-funding campaign.

He also offers anyone who is thinking of starting a crowd-funding project his 49 Tips to a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign – sharing his successful ideas because he can!

Learned a lot from this one!

Show #282 – January 23, 2016

Guests: Industry expert Jay Townley; Author, Coach, Sports Nutritionist Matt Fitzgerald

If you grew up riding a Schwinn, it very well might have been purchased from a Schwinn Total Concept Store; and, I doubt there is ANYONE who knows more about the original Schwinn Total Store concept than one of its originators, Jay Townley. In fact, you probably didn’t even realize the “totality” of that neighborhood Schwinn store – how it looked, what it had on the pegboard walls, and how the mechanics performed their tasks.

We talk about how that Total Concept idea developed, when and where the Park Tool Company began, and take a peek into what retail looks like today.

Today, Jay offers the bike industry insight, statistics, and guidance as part of the Gluskin-Townley Group and he’s my first guest this evening.

After our break and the rest of the week’s news, we once again talk with author, coach, sports nutritionist and journalist Matt Fitzgerald. Matt, who has written more than 20 book, including his bestselling book Racing Weight which gave us insight into brain hunger and what we need to do to become a leaner, meaner athlete, has released his newest book, “How Bad Do You Want It.”

In it, he discusses the psychology of mind over muscle. Relating the stories of real athletes’ like cyclist Greg LeMond, triathlete Paula-Newby Fraser, and of course the world-class Kenyan runners, the Matt unravels the reasons some of us succeed, some of us don’t, and how we can recognize who and what we are and perhaps change the way we behave.

Let’s begin tonight’s journey with long-time bicycle industry expert, Jay Townley.
