Show #406 – June 23, 2018

Phil Southerland is the mighty force behind Team Novo Nordisk as well as a myriad of projects related to diabetes.

Diagnosed at the age of 7 months, doctors told his family he probably wouldn’t live much past his mid-twenties.

Phil discovered that riding and Snickers kept his blood sugar manageable, along with the proper insulin monitoring and dosing, and knew at an early age that his success as an athlete was something any Type 1 diabetic could aspire to with some guidance.

That knowledge has informed every aspect of his life and his outlook about exercise and diet are most enlightening. His goal is to share that outlook and he’s put together quite a repertoire of projects that further that goal.

Author and journalist Daniel De Vise had literally just landed for the start of his book tour in the western part of the country when I caught up with him this week.

Dan’s first two books had absolutely NOTHING to do with sports; but, his background as the son of a cyclist who came to the U.S. from the Netherlands and his memories of the glory days of America’s only Tour de France winner, gave him the inspiration to research and write – The Comeback – Greg LeMond – True King of American Cycling, and a Legendary Tour de France.

With tons of research and access to both Greg and his family, along with many of the excellent books about him as well as others who were part of his cycling career as guides, Dan has written a narrative that everyone – whether you love and follow our sport or not – will find compelling.

Show #405 – June 16, 2018

Guests: Keith Oberg, Mike Sule

It’s advocacy all the way down.

Bikes for the World‘s Keith Oberg goes back to the beginning of the organization’s founding and takes us through the process that has delivered 140,000 bikes around the globe, creating job, getting kids to school, delivering much needed health care, and taking care of the environment in the process.

Then, Mile Sule, Executive Director of Asheville on Bikes in Asheville, NC, explains “tactical urbanism” and the project that will help to determine how a street in the city will transformed to accommodate ALL traffic.

I also begin the show with a “commentary” on why some of the old, venerable bike rides are losing attendance and what we might be able to do to revive cycling culture for a younger generation.

Show #404 – June 9,, 2018

Guests: Grant Petersen; TJ Eisenhart

Grant Petersen – Asked and answered! Brand new conversation with the Rivendell man. Grab your adult beverage and settle in – we’re talking all kinds of subjects – even disc brakes! 🙂

Then, it’s pro rider TJ Eisenhart – he may only be 23; but, he’s already got a dozen years of racing and podium finishes.

Currently riding for Holowesko-Citadel, TJ gives us some insight into what a sponsor expects, how he knew his destiny, and what he hopes his career holds.

Show #403 – June 2, 2018

Guests: Jamie Smith; Sarah Canner

Jamie Smith – race announcer, former bike racer, and author, joins me to talk about American Pro, his new book that breaks down US cycling as we follow the Astellas Cycling Team through its 5 years on the racing circuit.

Then, actress turned apparel maker Sarah Canner tells us how she came to develop her Vespertine line of “haute reflecteur” apparel.

There’s even some news!

Show #402 – May 26, 2018

Encore! Encore!  Enjoy this great show from Memorial Day 2018 and we’ll be back with a brand new episode next week.

We’ve had Elden Nelson on the show in the past; but, now he’s got a new gig and he is THE expert in the field. Elden has completed 20 Leadville 100 mountain bike races and now has a new podcast all about the event – how to train for it, how to finish it, surviving at altitude, what to eat, everything-you-need-to-know.

The podcast launched on Wednesday and I wanted to be the FIRST to cover the news!

Then, after two failed attempts – technical difficulties – I think we nailed the conversation on the third take. Joe Mungo Reed‘s first novel (his first book) is a slam dunk winner! We Begin the Ascent, out June 19th in the States, is a fictional account of a pro rider, his wife, and the cast of characters that make up the team.

The book is riveting – with uncanny insight into the mechanics of a pro team -and lots of twists and turns as the story unfolds. We don’t see a lot of cycling fiction – and this one is a winner!

Finally, as an answer to the requests I received – is an encore presentation of an interview I had with FK Day from SRAM and founder of World Bicycle Relief. It was one of the first interviews I did as The Outspoken Cyclist back in 2010 and, I must say, it’s not bad!

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend! Enjoy the show!

Show #401 – May 19, 2018

Guests: Grant Petersen (from 2013); Richard Sachs (from 2012)

ENCORE! ENCORE!

Yes, this week’s show IS an encore presentation – based upon input from YOU!

First up, Grant Petersen’s interview from 2013 when his new book “Just Ride” was published. Grant is always an interesting guy!

Then, it’s my second interview with Richard Sachs, this one about doping, with some interesting commentary and input from Greg Priddy.

We’ll be back with a brand new show next week!

Enjoy

With a background in fine art and graphic design, Julie has taken the artistic side of the frame building craft to a new level with her intricate designs and airbrushed finishes.

We talk about about than and more, finding we have a very personal connection!

Then, Dr. Norm Houze joins me to talk about his long history with long-distance cycling as well as coaching teams for the famous Little 500 Race in Bloomington, Indiana.

Founder of the deCycles Indiana summer tours, Norm explains how he developed this yearly event and what it takes to complete it.

Guests: Tom Helbig; Brian Chapman

On-the-road with Tomfoolery’s Tom Helbig!

He’s an adventurer who travels light and we catch up with him in Delaware as he makes his way up the east coast. We talk about his philosophy on life and what he does when he gets back to his minimalist lifestyle in Dayton, Ohio each summer.

Then, frame builder Brian Chapman of Chapman Cycles in Rhode Island and I talk about his classic, steel frames and how he builds bikes from start to finish – from concept to delivery.

His tandem won a prestigious award at NAHBS this year.

Show #398 – April 28, 2018

Guests: Marianne Martin; Brandale Randolph

Marianne Martin – photographer, athlete, AND the first woman to win the Tour Cycliste Feminin (Tour de France – women’s!) back in 1984. Marianne and I chat about her top-of-the-podium finish, sharing her trophy with her 5 other teammates and standing next to the TdF men’s winner that year, Laurent Fignon.

We talk about her training, her thoughts on women in cycling, and her current work as a professional photographer.

Then, author and newly-minted entrepreneur, Brandale Randolph talks about his new cycling business 1854 Cycling Company.

In his 2014 TedX Talk at Texas Tech University, Brandale, who was then the founder of the Project Poverty in Lubbock, Texas, talks about his understanding of how poverty REALLY works and what we are doing wrong.

Taking that knowledge and moving to Framingham, MA., Brandale will be employing women in an effort to elevate them from poverty to a living wage while making a full line of eBikes. It’s a great story.

Show #397 – April 21, 2018

Guests: Rich Thompson; Kim Perry; Molly Hurford

This week, I am sorry to report some heartbreaking news.

Many of you might remember my conversation with Jackie Crowell back in July of 2014. At the time, she had just given an amazing speech at the Amgen Tour of California and was in treatment for brain cancer. We spoke with her again in May of 2015 and I’ve been following her progress since.

She and her now husband Daniel had postponed their wedding until she was given an all-clear by her doctors and she was doing some great things coaching young riders.

Now, the doctors have discovered that her brain cancer is back – with a vengeance.

As of this week, the tumor that was discovered a short time ago has increased drastically in size and is heading for the middle of her brain where there are limited treatment options.

She is home and, while she isn’t up for visitors, would love to receive any support you might offer. You can find her FaceBook page, Jacquelyn Crowell or send her well wishes at:

162 Warren St. SE
Atlanta, GA 30317

Please keep Jackie, her husband Daniel, and Jackie’s sister Elizabeth who is there with her, in your thoughts and prayers.

Here is the show description for the week:

Our first destination is Virginia – Williamsburg to be exact.

We finally catch up with Rich Thompson from The College of William and Mary. Rich wears more hats than the average guy including one of the associate directors for the two student centers on campus as well as the professional advisor to the on campus Bike Alliance.

Rich and I talk about the Bike Alliance and its activities, the course work related to transportation and wellness, and more.

After a break, we talk with Kim Perry who is the ride director of Bike Virginia. Celebrating her 10th anniversary in the role as director, Kim explains the breadth and depth of this mammoth undertaking.

It’s the 31st year for Bike Virginia and there is something for everyone who rides a bike and wants a vacation. Bike Virginia is a 501C3 non-profit. The event promotes awareness of cycling, encourages communities to embrace biking, and promotes bicycle tourism. There are share the road campaigns, educational programs, and planning with local organizations on infrastructure and educational projects.

The Ride has options for how many days you might want to ride, up to 6, how many miles you might want to ride, up to 400, and how much fun you might want to have. Lots and lots!

We’ll take another break and then it’s off to somewhere north of Toronto. to speak with Bicycling Magazine and theoutdooredit‘s Molly Hurford. Last time we spoke, it was about a lot of the work that Molly does with women and young girls in the sport.

This week, I’ve asked Molly to share some of the items she’s found in apparel and accessories as we head on into the cycling season. We talk about her favorite three items – sun sleeves, the hiplok, and buffs – a cooling and warming bandana.
